may morning musings

may morning musings is a series of miniatures for solo flute, solo piano, and flute/piano duo, commissioned by flutist Philip Snyder. These short selections were each inspired on a whim by sounds and feelings of the mornings of May. I’ve always been interested in experimenting with a stream-of-consciousness style of composition, and I hope you find the result effective!

Performers are able to perform the miniatures in any sequence or combination, making for a performance that’s completely unique to the musicians and audiences alike.  While most of the music is notated traditionally, two of the movements require complete and total improvisation.

The movements are (in no particular order):
mauve, melody, mon(e)ologue, mon(tw)ologue, mother, mutterings

Special thanks to Philip Snyder and Suzanne Crabtree for their excellent renditions and for their decision to premiere this piece on the very first UNC Alumni Scholarship Concert.

Score and parts are available upon request.
